1500 Photo Competition FAQ & Rules

Who can enter?

The 1500 Photo Competition is a monthly* competition for anyone working in the Distribution Technologies, Procurement and IT Services departments of Lockheed Martin UK located in the Building 1500 area in Havant. To make things more interesting, their families and friends can also enter. The entry list is pretty flexible so you don't have to stop entering if you leave - ex-employees can continue to enter. Basically, the more the merrier but if you've no idea who Lockheed Martin are or where Havant is, you're probably not eligible!

How do I enter?

Submit your photo via e-mail to Kevin Handford before the closing date each month. It's as simple as that! If you're sending your photo via external e-mail (ie: not from within Lockheed Martin), it's not unknown for e-mails to go missing or take several days to turn up, so it’s a good idea to send it early and ask for a receipt. Receipts will only be sent when requested. Kevin can't be held responsible for e-mails that don't turn up but if it arrives before the voting is over and it's clear that it was sent on time, the photo will usually be added to the competition (although most people tend to vote within the first 24 hours, so you'll be at a disadvantage).

What can I win?

Not a lot! The idea behind the competition is to get people taking photos of things they might not normally think of. Cameras are expensive things and the competition gives you an excuse to make the most of your investment! Everyone in the family and even your friends can enter a photo, so you can make it a fun outing to get each month's photo. If you're lucky enough to win, you get your photo displayed in a frame in the DT office (building 1500) for a month and the pride of being announced the winner - that's about it! Don't be expecting a big trophy or wads of cash!

How do I win?

Each month* the photos are displayed on the AI Photo Gallery website for all to see. Then, for a week after the closing date of the competition, everyone can vote for their Top 5 photos and submit their list via e-mail to Kevin Handford (kevin.handford@lmco.com). Anyone can vote - it doesn't matter whether you've submitted a photo or not. Kevin will add up all the scores and announce the winner along with the next competition theme, then it starts all over again!

What's the theme?

Each competition theme is randomly drawn from a box and announced the same day. You can only enter photos that were taken after the announcement was made, so that it's fair for everyone. Anyone is welcome to suggest new themes - just send your suggestions to Kevin. They'll be vetted (there are some things that aren't suitable) and added to the list. All the announcements are made via e-mail. If you're on the AI_HAVANT distribution list, you already get these e-mails. If you're not (maybe you're not the one that works for Lockheed Martin), just drop Kevin an e-mail to get yourself added to the list.

But I don't have a professional digital SLR camera!

It doesn't matter what equipment you have - the photographer makes a good photo, not the camera. As long as you have some way of submitting a digital photo (in any format - jpg, tif, etc) via e-mail, you can enter. I'm afraid we can't scan in your prints but Tesco (and hundreds of other stores) will be more than happy to transfer a print or negative to a CD etc for you.

*When's the next competition?

The competitions are held roughly monthly. In fact, there's a new one every five weeks. You get four weeks to take and submit your photo, then there's another week for everyone to vote. The closing date/time is always a Wednesday at 8pm. The photos appear on the website by the Thursday morning and the voting closes the next Wednesday at 8pm.

How many photos can I submit?

Just the one each month - don't be greedy! However, you can combine multiple images in that one photo if you like (but see rule 5 below).

Are there any rules?

This is meant as a friendly little competition - nothing too heavy or complicated - but everything needs some structure so there are a few rules...

  1. The photograph must be taken/captured by the submitter.
In other words, it has to be your picture. Don't send in something you found on the internet!
  2. The photograph must have been taken within the four weeks before the closing date.
The idea is that you go out and have some fun with your camera, not sit in front of your PC looking for that perfect photo you took 5 years ago.
  3. The photograph must be your own work, to which you hold the copyright.
When you create something, you hold the copyright to that original work. You wouldn't like it if someone else took it and claimed they'd created it!
  4. The photograph must not be a copy of another image (eg: a photo of a photo/card/painting).
You can't copy someone else's work. If you submit a photo of a Picasso painting, it doesn't make you Picasso!
  5. Post processing is allowed as long as all components of the photograph are your own.
You can change things like colours in your photo. You can make a composite of several different images, as long as each image complies with all the other rules (ie: each one has been taken by you within the correct dates). What you can't do is draw or write things on your photo - it's not a drawing competition!
  6. The photograph must be submitted to Kevin Handford (kevin.handford@lmco.com) by the closing date in digital format.
If you're having technical problems sending your photo to Kevin, contact him ASAP and beg for leniency!
  7. Entries are subject to checking by Kevin Handford and Dan Cooke and must not violate any Lockheed Martin policy. All decisions on whether a photograph can be allowed or not are final.
Lockheed Martin pride themselves on being a highly ethical company and as such, there are some images which may not be appropriate to be displayed on a website which is likely to be viewed by its employees. Furthermore, this is a family competition so we don't want any smut! If you're not sure whether your photo might be a bit dodgy, the best idea is to submit it early and ask if it will be OK. If it's not, you'll still have time to take another one.
